I'm the big firm lawyer with the co-working attitude.
I started at O’Melveny & Myers (L.A. & D.C.), handled business affairs at Equity Marketing & have run my own firm for over 20 years. I embrace a personal style of respect, communication, & informality that connects with clients no matter their title or background. My big thrills are being a happy husband and a silly daddy.
Let's TalkMy Full Bio
arrow_drop_down_circleI grew up in Los Angeles and graduated from Pomona College with a B.A. in Economics and Public Policy Analysis. I then graduated from U.S.C. Law School, where I served on the editorial board of the law review and was awarded the Order of the Coif for excellence in scholarship.
I began my legal career at O'Melveny & Myers, a 130 year old international law firm. As a member of the transactions group in their Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., offices, I structured multi-million dollar mergers and acquisitions and specialized in creating and analyzing complex financial investments.
After that, I managed all Business Affairs for Equity Marketing, Inc. At that time, Equity Marketing manufactured virtually all of the Kids Meal premiums distributed by Burger King, and operated a consumer products division featuring Scooby Doo toys, Tub Tints, and Headliners licensed collectible figures. I advised on all aspects of the business including agency-client agreements, license agreements, national promotions, and packaging and safety issues.
This diverse experience – large law firm, in-house, my own shop – gives me unique perspectives and skills, combining the rigor of the ivory tower’s high legal and ethical standards with a deep understanding of competing business interests and risks. Instead of merely spouting law, I work closely with clients to learn their business and help them navigate the ever-changing and challenging environment to grow business, license concepts, and leverage brands and technologies.
I have guest lectured at New York International Toy Fair, Otis School of the Arts, Pepperdine University Graziadio School of Business and Management, and U.S.C. Law School. I have been active in the community and volunteer efforts and was awarded the 2007 Volunteer Attorney of the Year Award by Bet Tzedek Legal Services.
I’m easy to reach and easy to talk to, regardless of your background, experience or position. Some of my clients have been with me for over ten years. I get referrals from people who were on the other side of my deals. I take the time to make everything understandable. I’m happy to meet at my office, your office, Peets or wherever.
Let's TalkI work with a broad range of companies, creators, consultants and agencies, providing strategic and legal advice, commercializing intellectual property, and negotiating transactions.
I negotiate contracts and business deals, provide general legal and business advice, and register trademarks. I work extensively with license agreements, distribution deals, and agency and client contracts.
I am your general counsel and sounding board. I work with everyone from the boardroom to the breakroom. I speak four languages: legal, marketing, creative and finance.
